COVID-19 TESTING

Covid-19 Testing

What kind of Covid-19 testing do you do?

We can perform Covid-19 RT-PCR, Antigen, and Antibody testing directly in our office.

These tests are performed under FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) at the point-of-care via CLIA-waiver. They have not been FDA cleared or approved.

A negative antigen test does not completely rule out acute COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. If an acute infection is suspected based on symptomotology, direct testing for COVID-19 may be necessary via molecular testing.

Results from antibody testing should not be used to diagnose or exclude acute COVID-19 infection and may not be used to conclude COVID-19 immunity. Positive antibody test results may be due to past or present infection with non-COVID-19 coronavirus strains, such as coronavirus HKU1, NL63, OC43, or 229E.

What is the Covid-19 RT-PCR test?

We use the Accula Covid-19 RT-PCR test kit by Mesa Biotech. PCR testing is the gold standard for detecting the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2. This test is used for detection of early COVID-19 infection. It is also the most widely accepted test for both domestic and international travel.

It is performed using a foam tipped swab which does not reach as far back into the nasal cavity as a traditional Covid-19 testing swab. This makes obtaining a sample more comfortable for the patient. The accuracy of this test is 99%. Results are available in 30 minutes.

What is the Covid-19 antigen test?

The COVID-19 antigen test performed in our office is the BD Veritor Plus antigen test which is used for detection of early COVID-19 infection. It is performed using a foam tipped swab which does not reach as far back into the nasal cavity as a traditional Covid-19 testing swab. This makes obtaining a sample more comfortable for the patient. Accuracy of this test is 86%. Results are available in 15 minutes.

What is the Covid-19 antibody test?

We use the Covid-19 antibody test kit by Ecotest. It detects both IgM and IgG Covid-19 antibodies. It looks for antibodies that are made by your immune system in response to Covid-19. It is not used to detect an active Covid-19 infection. It is done to see if you have had a recent or past Covid-19 infection. A simple fingerstick for a drop of blood is all that is needed. Accuracy of this test is 99%. Results are available in 15 minutes.

What is the cost of the tests?

As of July 31, 2020 insurance carriers are not covering the cost of COVID-19 screening for the purpose of surgical clearance, return to work mandates by employers, or for travel. These are not considered a medical necessity by insurance carriers.

Accordingly, the price for the antibody test is $100, the cost for the antigen test is $150, and the cost for the RT-PCR test is $250 with same day results in 15-30 minutes.

Can you provide a travel letter?

We can provide you with a travel letter if needed upon request.

Please note it is the responsibility of the traveler to have detailed knowledge of the specific Covid testing requirements of the destination country/state and the airline. This includes requirements for test acceptance and testing timeline start date.

We accept absolutely NO liability or responsibility for Covid travel testing requirements as there are too many destinations each with their own specific requirements.
