What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a neuromuscular agent that uses a purified and refined form of botulinum toxin to reduce the appearance of so-called dynamic wrinkles – lines and creases that form when you make a facial expression like laughing, smiling or frowning. When facial expressions are formed, underlying muscles contract and pull on the skin, causing wrinkles to form. When injected into these muscles, BOTOX® works by blocking the signals that “tell” the muscles to contract. Because the muscles don’t respond, they can’t pull on the skin can cause wrinkles to appear. The effects of BOTOX® last about four months, but some patients find repeated treatments help soften lines and wrinkles over time so they may be able to wait a little longer between injections. BOTOX® is used to treat wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows (“frown lines”) and at the corners of the eyes (“crow’s feet”).

What ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Cosmetic fillers are used to correct the appearance of static wrinkles, the lines, and creases that appear as a result of sun damage, loss of elasticity, skin laxity, gravity and genetics, and which become more prevalent as we get older. Some fillers use hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and helps skin retain moisture so it appears plumper and firmer. When injected into lines and wrinkles, fillers improve the depressions to help skin look smoother and more youthful. Fillers can be used to treat wrinkles and add volume in many areas of the face, including the lines that extend from the nose to the mouth and the mouth to the chin, and the effects can last for up to a year.

Can I have both BOTOX® and FILLERS?

Yes, in fact, many patients have BOTOX® and fillers to correct both dynamic and static wrinkles so they can enjoy the effects of a “mini-facelift” without the need for surgery.
